As part of its ongoing efforts to promote solidarity and support among various religious minorities and communities, the International Union for Minority Media paid a visit this Saturday evening at 7:00 PM to Saint George (Mar Gorgis) Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Baghdad. The purpose of the visit was to express heartfelt condolences for the tragic terrorist attack that recently struck Mar Elias Church in Syria, resulting in multiple casualties and injuries.
The delegation was led by the Union’s President, Mr. Mahmoud Al-Mandeel, accompanied by the Union’s Vice President, Ms. Sanaa Saeed. Mr. Al-Mandeel expressed deep sorrow over the brutal act of terrorism that targeted worshippers and a sacred house of God. He emphasized the importance of unity and mutual support among all religious groups in the face of such painful events. He also expressed hope that Syria would overcome this tragedy and that peace and stability would return to the region.
The Union was received by Father Younan Ibrahim, pastor of the cathedral, along with members of the clergy and parishioners. A special prayer service and condolence ceremony was held in memory of the victims, reflecting a spirit of compassion, solidarity, and unity in adversity.
Both sides stressed the importance of preserving national unity and reinforcing the values of tolerance and peaceful coexistence, especially amid the challenges that religious minorities are facing in the region.
At the conclusion of the visit, Mr. Mahmoud Al-Mandeel reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening future cooperation with the Greek Orthodox Church and other religious institutions. He emphasized that such visits reflect the spirit of fraternity and humanitarian support embraced by the Union across all its members and areas of presence. “Supporting Christians and all minorities in their time of need is not a favor—it is a moral and human duty,” he stated.

في إطار مبادراته المستمرة لتعزيز روح التضامن والتآزر بين مختلف الطوائف والأقليات الدينية، قام وفد الاتحاد الدولي لإعلام الأقليات، مساء اليوم السبت، بزيارة إلى كاتدرائية القديس جاورجيوس (مار جرجس) للروم الأرثوذكس في بغداد، في تمام الساعة السابعة مساءً، وذلك لتقديم واجب العزاء في الحادث الإرهابي الأليم الذي استهدف كنيسة مار إلياس في سوريا قبل أيام، وأدى إلى سقوط عدد من الضحايا والجرحى.
ترأس الوفد رئيس الاتحاد السيد محمود المنديل، وبرفقة نائب رئيس الاتحاد السيدة سناء سعيد، وعدد من اعضاد الاتحاد. حيث عبّر خلال اللقاء عن بالغ حزنه واستنكاره لهذه الجريمة التي استهدفت دور العبادة والمصلّين، مؤكدًا على أهمية التضامن بين مكونات المجتمع الديني والإنساني لمواجهة التطرف والتصدي لخطاب الكراهية. كما أعرب عن أمله في أن تتعافى سوريا من هذه المأساة، وأن يسود السلام والاستقرار في المنطقة.
كان في استقبال الوفد الاب الخوري يونان الفريد وكيل مطران الروم الارثدوكس في العراق.
، وعدد من وجهاء الكنيسة وأبناء الطائفة، حيث أُقيمت مراسم تعزية وقراءة صلوات خاصة لأرواح الضحايا، في أجواء خيمت عليها مشاعر الألم والوحدة والتضامن.
وأكد الجانبان على ضرورة توحيد الصفوف وتعزيز قيم التسامح والتعايش السلمي، كوسيلة لمواجهة التطرف والإرهاب، والحفاظ على النسيج الوطني والاجتماعي، لا سيما في ظل التحديات التي تواجهها الأقليات الدينية في المنطقة.
وفي ختام الزيارة، جدّد السيد محمود المنديل تطلعه لتعزيز سبل التعاون المشترك مع الكنيسة الرومية الأرثوذكسية وباقي المؤسسات الدينية، مشددًا على أن مثل هذه المبادرات تعكس روح الأخوّة والإنسانية التي يتبناها الاتحاد في مختلف أنشطته ومجالات عمله، مؤكدًا أن "دعم المسيحيين وسائر الديانات والمكونات في محنهم ليس مجاملة بل واجب إنساني وأخلاقي".
